Every charity gala has three goals:
-
Raise funds
- Clearly communicate the impact they are having
-
Strengthen relationships with corporate sponsors and those donating.
The challenge?
How do you deliver an event where the energy remains high, the sponsors feel valued, and guests don’t disengage during long, emotive speeches. That’s where the right host changes everything.
A Champion of Those Doing Good
Without meaning to sound too over-righteous, Charity isn’t something I step into just for events, it’s actually part of who I am.
I grew up in the Salvation Army, which many know for its charity work, (though fewer realise it’s also a church community). Even before the age of 10, you would have found me helping my grandad deliver soup to homeless people at their soup kitchen.
That upbringing shaped my values and kept me connected to social action projects from an early age.
Over the years, I’ve been hands-on with local and international initiatives, both as a volunteer and in paid roles.
I’m an ambassador for Compassion UK that helps release children from extreme poverty, a facilitator for the Diana Award Anti Bullying Programme and I’m about to enter into some work with Ahead Partnership to help young people think about their careers.
Giving back is a thread that runs through my life. So when I host charity events, I don’t just see myself as an MC. I’m there to protect the cause and ensure the mission shines. I host with authencitcity and a genuine desire to see the charity’s work benefit from the event.
Protecting the Tone
My role is to keep the tone consistent. I connect segments smoothly so that every moment supports the purpose of the evening. This isn’t about rigid scripts and schedules, but about understanding flow and having the flexibility to read the room.
Guests should leave remembering the impact of your charity , not the awkward gaps in the programme.
Lifting the Energy
Energy is currency at fundraising evenings. When the room feels flat, donations dip. When the room feels alive, people give more freely. (You should see me host an auction!)
That’s why I focus on pace, humour, and warmth. I know how to inject lightness without undercutting the seriousness of the cause. I bring guests together, invite sponsors into the spotlight in the right way, and build natural momentum throughout the night.
When I host, people don’t just attend out of duty, they engage because the tone the evening has been carefully crafted. That difference is what turns a gala into a memorable experience.
Running the Room
Great fundraising events aren’t left to chance. They’re guided.
-
Awards and auctions become energisers rather than drain the enthusiasm.
-
Donors and sponsors are acknowledged with sincerity, not formality
-
Everyone feels part of something bigger than themselves
That’s the skill of a host who understands both performance and purpose. I’ve seen what works at corporate events, and I’ve lived the values that drive charity fundraising. Put those together, and the result is a room that feels cared for and inspired.
Warmth and Professionalism
Sponsors and donors don’t want another scripted thank-you. They want to feel genuinely appreciated.
My approach is professional, but never so scripted that it feels inauthentic. Warm, but never overfamiliar. I work closely with the organising team, respecting the time and energy that’s gone into planning. The outcome is an event where your mission is amplified, and your supporters leave feeling part of the story.
If you’re planning a gala, dinner, or donor event, you want a host who believes in the cause as much as you do. Someone who understands that charity work isn’t about one night, but about the long-term impact you’re building.
Why I Care
For me, charity events are personal. I don’t see them as just another event, I see them as opportunities to help good work thrive. Now don’t get me wrong, you’ll still need to make the investment of my fee – this is after all my full time career – but I’m committed to ensuring that the return on that investment is significant.
That’s why I speak about your mission with authenticity. That’s why I balance structure with heart. And that’s why I put every skill I have, from comedy to hosting to storytelling, into supporting your evening.
Because when a room feels inspired, people give.
And when people give, your charity can do more good.
